Welsh Open Singles 2009

Chair of Tournament Committee Philip Hanley with 2009 Champion Jason Greenslade

Jason makes it 8

This afternoon Jason Greenslade extended his Welsh Open Singles Championship wins to 8. After a feast of bowling throughout the past week, Jason defeated Hugh morris of the Pontyclun Club in a thrilling final.

Earlier in the day Hugh defeated 2 times winner Neil Collett, and Jason defeated fellow Dinas Powis bowler David Vowles.

This afternoon was the climax of another successful week of high quality bowling at the Dinas Powis Open. Thanks to all who entered the tournament and to the Club members, both men and ladies, whose contribution in organising the tournament and to the success of the week was again immense.

The Club is most grateful to its sponsors, Spire Cardiff Hospital and 50 plus Insurance Services, and to the advertisers in the program without whose generous donations the tournament could not take place.

Special thanks must go to Clive and Kate Todd who organised the schedule of matches throughout the week with the professionalism that we have come to expect.

We look forward to another successful tournament in 2010.

Correction to our "Belated Congratulations" item below.

Information recently received by Email tells me that I mistakenly reported that Chris Wright was the youngest winner of the Dinas Powis Club Championship. Not so.. the youngest player to win the Club Championship was Jeff Webley back in 1989 - aged 16. Apologies first of all to Jeff and also to Chris for taking this accolade from him so cruelly.

Incidently Jeff is also the youngest player to win the Welsh Open Singles Championship, which he won in 1992 aged 19 - unless you can tell me different....

Apologies - Captain's Letter Errors.

All members should have received the Captain's Letter welcoming the 2008 outdoor season. There were, in some of the letters, typographical errors for which I apologise. More importantly there was a mistake in the timing of the open evening. The correct timings are as follows.

Evening opening of green is at 6.00pm 11th April 2008.

Extraordinary Meeting of the Mens Bowling Section is at 6.30pm 11th April 2008. Agenda item will be the election of the 1st Team Captain for 2008

Young Dinas Powis bowler Chris Wright had a successful end to his Indoor season. A win in the final of the Sully IBC under 17 singles qualifies him to represent Sully in the Welsh under 17 singles next year. Combine this with reaching the final of the Welsh Junior Pairs with Luke Stanley of the Barry Athletic Club and being chosen to represent Wales in the Inaugural Under Sixteen Representative Series held at Merthyr IBC, gave Chris his first taste of real success in the game. Seen here with his trophies Chris says he enjoyed the experience and would use it as a springboard to develop his game
